Flex Spa is a well-known gay bathhouse in Los Angeles.
Since at least the 1920s, gay men’s bathhouses have existed in the United States. During the height of the AIDS epidemic in the late 1980s, a movement to close them began.
Proponents of the closure claimed that the bathhouses were gathering places for gay men to engage in unprotected sex with strangers. Opponents claimed the bathhouses were the ideal location for educating gay men about the dangers of unprotected sex and served as a vital gathering place in a city where many people were hostile to gay people.
