Rules, founded by Thomas Rule in 1798, is a Covent Garden institution and London’s oldest restaurant. Tuxedoed waiters glide around the traditional décor, which is filled with vintage artwork and features soft banquettes that provide a secluded escape from the main dining room. The hearty menu of traditional British cuisine focuses on classic game cookery, oysters, pies, and puddings, with game birds, roe deer, and Belted Galloway beef fresh from the establishment’s own High Pennines farm. The wine list is dominated by French producers, but there are also national draught beers offered in silver tankards.
