The Islander was a popular Tiki bar, restaurant, and nightclub (Latitude 20) in Stockton, California from 1963 through 1983. Hop Louie was the original owner, and he is credited with commissioning the architect who designed the distinctive Shipwreck exterior and bringing on Oceanic Arts to develop the lavish inside.
Tommy Lee took over as proprietor in 1966, and story has it that Louie lost the institution in a crap game. The Islander had a large range of tiki mugs as well as a large beverage and meal menu.
There was an outrigger canoe that hung over the guests’ heads, velvet paintings of topless Tahitian ladies, flaming torches, and fire waving hula dancers, in addition to the standard thatch, tikis, and float lights.
